Requirements For an Online PAT Testing Course

Want to understand what you need before starting your Online PAT training?

A trainee is smiling after the Successful Completion of the Online PAT Testing course from PAT Training Now

This guide lays out the key online PAT testing course requirements

  • what the law expects,
  • how long it takes,
  • what it costs, and
  • The  certificate you will hold at the finish.

Under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, anyone responsible for workplace sockets and plugs must show competence.

In the next few minutes you will discover who can enroll, which devices you need, and how our UKRS certificate satisfies auditors.

Let’s get started,

What Is PAT Testing & Why It Matters

Portable appliance testing is a set of simple visual checks plus meter readings that confirm an item is safe to plug in. When staff use equipment that has hidden faults, they risk shocks, burns, or fire.

comparing electrical accident risks with benefits of regular PAT checks

HSE receives about 1,000 reports of electrical accidents at work each year, and roughly 25 prove fatal. A regular Portable Appliance Testing can creates difference here. What appliances need PAT Testing BTW?

Common types of appliance groups you Need to PAT Test

  • Class I – metal-cased items that need an earth path (kettles, microwaves)
  • Class II – double-insulated plastics with no earth (hair dryers, drills)
  • IT/SELV – extra-low-voltage kit (laptop chargers, phone adapters)

Class I kettle, Class II hair dryer, IT laptop charger—examples of appliances needing different PAT tests

Understanding these classes cuts risk and points you to the right test method.

Next we will see how the law turns this good practice into a duty.

Do You Legally Need a PAT Testing Qualification?

“No”. There is no state-issued licence for PAT testing.

Instead, what the law demands is competence. Regulation 4 of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 states: “All systems shall at all times be of such construction as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, danger… and shall be maintained accordingly.”

Now you might be thinking, how do you become PAT competent?

Right!

Don’t worry!

A structured PAT course plus an accredited exam is the simplest way to help you become competent. Auditors accept the digital certificate as evidence, and it keeps files tidy for any HSE visit.

Insurers care, too. Risk teams now add PAT-evidence clauses to many policies written after 2023, warning that missing or out-of-date records can push up premiums or block claims.

Recognised Certifications & Accreditations

Training that ends with a badge you can show to an auditor or insurer builds real confidence.

Few names carry weight in the UK PAT world:

  • UKRS (United Kingdom Rural Skills)
  • IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health)
  • Qualsafe Awards

UKRS-Accredited Course Importance

  • Exam format: 40–50 multiple-choice questions, one-hour time limit, webcam proctoring.
  • Pass mark: 70 %.
  • Eligibility: age 18 +, basic electrical skills (see previous section).
  • Syllabus last reviewed: April 2024 to align with the IET 5th Edition.
  • Renewal cycle: certificate valid for three years, then quick refresher keeps it live.

Holding this certificate makes you the “competent person” as a PAT Tester.

Online PAT Testing Course Structure & Curriculum Overview

Below is a quick walk-through of the five learning blocks you complete in order.

Each block ends with a short quiz or task so you can check you are on track.

  1. Electrical Safety Theory
Outcome: Identify shock and fire hazards in plugs, cables, and sockets.
  2. Regulations & Standards
Outcome: Explain how the Electricity at Work Regulations and the IET Code guide daily checks.
  3. Equipment Familiarization
Outcome: Operate a PAT tester safely and choose the right settings for Class I, Class II, and IT gear.
  4. Practical Tests (live demo)
Outcome: Perform earth bond, insulation, and polarity tests and document results.
  5. Online Assessment
Outcome: Demonstrate competence in a timed, proctored exam and download your certificate.

Typical Duration & Study Hours

Most learners finish in 4–6 hours at their own pace. Electricians often move quicker; first-timers may pause to practice. The learning portal remembers your place, so you can split study into short bursts whenever your schedule allows.

Assessment & Certification Process

Your final test runs online in a secure proctor window.

A live checker confirms your photo ID, asks for a slow 360-degree room scan, and watches the screen feed while you work.

  • Pass mark: 70 % or higher depends on the provider.
  • Retakes: Free retake within 30 days if you miss the mark.
  • Results: the system scores you on the spot.
  • Certificate: a PDF lands in your inbox within 24 hours. Order a printed copy for £0 if you need one for noticeboards or audit packs.

This process gives a clear, dated record that you met the competence standard.

How to Choose a Trusted Online PAT Course Provider (5-Step Guide)

  1. Look for clear accreditation badges
UKRS, IOSH or Qualsafe logos should sit on the course page and link to a current approval certificate.
  2. Check tutor credentials
Trainers should be practising electricians or safety officers with recent site hours, not just voice-over narrators.
  3. Read real learner reviews
Aim for an average rating of 4.5 / 5 or higher on Trustpilot. Scan the lower-star comments to spot any recurring problems.
  4. Test support speed
Send a short question by email or chat. A good provider replies within one working day and gives a name, not a ticket number.
  5. Confirm exam safeguards
The terms should promise one free retake and show a GDPR policy that explains how recorded proctor footage is stored and deleted.

FAQs About Online PAT Testing Courses

Do I need to be an electrician to sit the course?
No. You need basic electrical literacy: read circuit symbols and use a multimeter. The lessons walk you through each test step.

How long will the training take?
Most learners finish in four to six hours. You can pause, practice, and resume, so the schedule fits around your shift.

Is the certificate valid in law?
Yes. Insurers and safety auditors accept UKRS, IOSH, or Qualsafe certificates as proof a competent person carried out testing under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

What equipment must I buy?
At minimum, a battery PAT tester, IEC lead set, labels, and a dummy load. Prices start near £259+ . Borrow or hire gear first if you want to try it.

Will my certificate count overseas?
Many EU and Commonwealth safety bodies accept UKRS evidence, but rules differ by country.

How often should I renew?
Best practice is every three years or sooner if standards update.

How hard is the exam?
The multiple-choice test uses real work scenarios, not trick theory. If you score 80 % on the module quizzes, you are ready to pass first time.

What if I lose the internet during the test?
The proctor freezes your timer, lets you reconnect, and then restarts the session. You keep all progress and pay no fee for a retake.
